THE DALLES — Several students took part in North Wasco County School District 21’s (NWCSD) Sept. 24 board meeting, two in an official capacity.
Oliver Stevens and Xitlali Castro Rodriguez were sworn in as this year’s student representatives, taking the oath of office after the Pledge of Allegiance.
Board and audience members also heard from Colonel Wright Elementary students Etti Bush, Ernest Vieira, and William Moore, who reported the school’s biggest event, the Harvest Festival, is coming up on Oct. 7. Additionally, the school was paid a visit by Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue firefighters, who arrived in a fire truck to talk about their work.Â
Dry Hollow Elementary School student Holten Lawrence reported author Leslie Barnard will be visiting the school, and a coming focus for the year is to get students focused on reading. A group from Dry Hollow will also be headed to the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery to learn about the life of fish as a school field trip.Â
The Dalles Middle School student Kaleb Tonn said that students are excited about their dual language days.
Student reports closed with Oliver Stevens from The Dalles High School, who said that the girls’ soccer team is first in the state and undefeated. He also noted that there are 26 different clubs (including seven new ones) at the high school with 100 students signing up, and this interest is helping boost school spirit and participation.
Student trip
Courtney Middleton, Migrant Education director, introduced Nubia Contreras Vi-la, who, along with students, presented about their recent trip to Washington, D.C. The group learned about the three branches of government, visited many historical monuments and museums, and toured Capitol Hill.
She said students came away with a better understanding of leadership, how government works, and saw the American history they were learning about in the classroom up close and in person.
