THE SHERMAN Huskies had seven players earn Blue Mountain Conference honors, led by first teamers Austin Kaseberg, Max Martin, Maverick Winslow and Jacob Justesen. Bradley Moe, Kyle Fields and Brett Troutman were selected as honorable mentions. Winslow earned a third-team all-state pick.
Given the early-season injuries and sickness bug that hampered progression, the Sherman Huskies won five of their final seven games and came within seven innings of earning a district playoff spot to end the season with a 13-11 record.
Opposing coaches noticed the way Sherman hit its stride late in the season, and awarded seven players in the Blue Mountain Conference all-league list, with Austin Kaseberg, Max Martin, Maverick Winslow and Jacob Justesen taking home first-team bids.
Bradley Moe, Kyle Fields and Brett Troutman rounded out the list with honorable mention selections.
“It’s a big deal. We had two good teams in our league and they had a lot of good players too, so to have those seven guys is quite an honor,” said Sherman coach Joe Justesen. “We had nine all-stars in my opinion, unfortunately not everyone gets in, but those that did deserved it.”
Kaseberg, one of the seniors on the roster this season, put up standout numbers on the mound and in the batter’s box to lead the Huskies in his final campaign.
On the year, Kaseberg posted .419 batting average with a team-high 22 RBIs, to go along with six doubles, a triple and only five strikeouts in 62 at-bats.
Kaseberg was also selected to play in the 29th annual East-West All-Star Baseball Series on June 13-14 at Linfield College in McMinnville.
Kaseberg, who played first base, had a two-run double, walked and scored a run in the opener to help lead the East squad to an 11-1 win.
In the second game, he had a single and the East won by 6-3.
The West salvaged a win Sunday by a 5-2 score, as Kaseberg finished the three-day event with a 3 for 6 effort.
Kaseberg was one of 36 high school seniors selected from the Oregon Class 3A, 2A and 1A schools.
“It was such an honor to represent Sherman County,” Kaseberg said. “I want to give a thank you for all of the support from family and friends. It was the best way to end my high school baseball career.”
Now the goal is to try to replace the productive offensive, defensive, pitching and leadership elements Kaseberg brought to the program for four seasons.
“Losing Austin is a killer,” Coach Justesen said of the recent Sherman graduate. “He had a great year for us and he got to play in the all-star game. He represented us well to finish off his high school career. He leaves a little bit of a hole there, especially with the positions he played.”
Martin impressed with his play in the infield in his sophomore campaign with a .365 batting average and a team-leading 24 runs scored. He had four doubles and two triples.
Jacob Justesen put forth a solid .368 batting average with 20 runs scored, 14 RBIs, a team-high 18 stolen bases, five doubles, a triple and a home run.
From his award-winning outfield position, Jacob Justesen had four outfield assists.
Winslow was in a class of his own this past year with a first-team all-league award for his play in the outfield, as well as a third-team all-state honor.
The speedster batted a robust .455 overall with 22 runs scored, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
A right-handed batter, Winslow smacked six doubles and added a team-leading four triples.
“Maverick is a hustler and an all-around great athlete who gives it everything he has every time he steps on the field,” Coach Justesen said. “It is nice to see his hard work paying off.”
In 24 games, the Huskies scored 194 runs, including 46 in eight league contests.
Part of that offensive success was due to the outputs of honorable mention picks and future standouts, Bradley Moe, Kyle Fields and Brett Troutman.
“I hope they and the other kids who were honorable mention can build off their success. They did very well,” Coach Justesen said. “I hope that they can take that next step in the next few years.”
