The Columbia High Bruins concluded their WIAA Class 1A softball season after losing two games in the District 4 playoffs, May 15 at Fort Borst Park in Centralia.
The No. 20-ranked Bruins (12-10) lost, 15-5, to the Elma High Eagles (14-6) in a noon matchup last Wednesday in the eight-team, double elimination tournament. The Bruins, guided by second-year Coach Jesse Bryan, then played a second contest that same day at 4 p.m. and they lost, 16-14, to the Eatonville High Cruisers (7-11).
“By next year, we’re going to be a tough team to handle,” said Bryan. “These girls are going to play a lot of summer league ball; they’ll do lots of offseason stuff and they’re really excited about seeing how much our team improved this year.”
In their first district game, Elma gained the early momentum in building a 6-0 lead after two innings. The Bruins got on the scoreboard in the fourth when they scored twice, making it 6-2. The Bruins committed six errors and they were outhit, 15-7, by the Eagles. The Bruins were led on offense by the freshmen trio of Fiona Grabb (3-for-3), Kiera Bucher (2-for-3, RBI), and Julia Mullinix (2-for-3, RBI).
In their second matchup, the Bruins fell behind 6-2 after two innings but fought back and outscored the Cruisers, 7-1, over the next two innings to take a 9-7 fourth-inning advantage.
“We thought for sure that we would win the second game,” said Bryan. “We had a lead against Eatonville, so we really had a good chance to win that game, but then we made some costly errors (five total) that hurt us. Everybody was hitting well on offense, but our defense just didn’t hold up the way we needed it to.”
