THE DALLES – The state meet trophy haul continued for The Dalles High boys cross country team Nov. 8, when the Riverhawks finished fourth in the Class 4A race at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Senior Tyson Long led Coach Jill Bell’s team with his 13th place finish, helping the Riverhawks score 124 team points. La Grande won the meet with 61 points.
Long joined a distinguished group of runners who qualified for the state meet all four of his high school seasons. He also added his name to the elite group of runners who were part of trophy finishes (top four) each year of high school. The Dalles was second in 2024, third in 2023, and first in 2022.
Long ran the Lane CC course in 16 minutes, 55 seconds with sophomore teammate Luke Sorenson two spots back in 16:59. Also figuring in the team score (top five runners) for The Dalles was senior Aiden Erickson (36th, 17:31, season best), freshman Lazarus Taylor (39th, 17:35, lifetime best), and senior Phoenix Nanie (49th, 17:50, lifetime best). Junior Zeb Stelzer was 53rd in 18:01, and senior Noah Preston was 57th in 18:08.
Erickson and Preston were competing in their third state meet for the Riverhawks. The Dalles’ boys team has qualified for the state meet every season it has been held since 2019 – six-year run (2019 and 2021 were as a 5A school).
The Dalles’ girls team has a seven-state-meet-appearance streak. The Riverhawks finished sixth last weekend with 154 points. La Grande also won the girls meet with 51 points. The team scorers for The Dalles were sophomore Flamingo Duyck, who was 23rd in a lifetime best of 20:26; senior Abigail Pope, 30th in 20:44; senior Laura Black, 40th, season best 21:11; freshman Rozlyn Elliott, 43rd in a lifetime best 21:19; and junior Kestley Hodges, 55th, 21:58. Junior Alessandra Meza and sophomore Josie Brace finished 60th and 61st, each timed in 22:07.

The Riverhawk girls – who won their third straight district title the week prior to state – finished third in Eugene in 2024.
