The Dalles High Riverhawks had a chance to reach the OSAA Class 4A state playoffs for the first time since 2019, but host Estacada had other ideas and beat the Riverhawks, 23-0, in a Special District 2 game on Oct. 27.
The Riverhawks (2-3 SD2, 4-5 overall), guided by second-year Coach Marc Schilling, finished tied for third place in the six-team league with the Gladstone High Gladiators (2-3 SD2, 3-6 overall). The top three teams advanced to the playoffs and a tiebreaker of head-to-head competition determined third place. Because the Riverhawks lost, 21-8, to Gladstone on Sept. 28, the Gladiators earned the league’s third playoff berth.
“They [Rangers] got some momentum right before halftime with an 8-0 lead and then that continued for them in the second half, when they scored a touchdown in the third quarter and one in the fourth. We played well defensively, with Jacob Berkovich, Trace Larson and Merik Peacock all playing a great game. The kids battled hard all the way to the end and I’m super proud of them.”
Berkovich led the Riverhawk ground game with 13 carries for 33 yards rushing. Junior quarterback Emerson Traub was 12-for-23 passing for 130 yards. Anthony Jara (five catches, 56 yards receiving) and Logan Mitchell (four catches, 66 yards receiving) contributed to the offense.
The contest marked the final game of the The Dalles High School football career of seniors Berkovich, Jara, Merik Peacock, Connor Sam, Austen Manciu and Alexis Valadez.
