HRV baseball’s offense explodes in rout of Mountain View
The most decisive win for the HRV baseball team so far this season, the Eagles (9-3) put on an offensive show against Mountain View (4-6) on Friday, defeating the Cougars 12-2 in Central Oregon. HRV Head Coach Erich Harjo said on the team’s Facebook page that the Eagles had “a monster day in Bend,” peppering the Cougars with nine hits, “including a three-run bomb by Patrick Harvey, a triple by Dallas Buckley, and a grand slam by Skyler Hunter!” Harvey also pitched all seven innings for HRV, striking out five batters. The Eagles return to Bend this week with a matchup against Redmond (6-3) Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., then will return Saturday to host their league debut against Pendleton (9-3) in a doubleheader that starts at noon.
HRV softball falls to Tigard
The Eagles (6-6) had a quiet night scoring-wise, but were still able to put up eight hits in the team’s 8-1 loss to 6A Tigard (8-4) Friday in Hood River. The lone run of the evening came from Katie Perkins, who scored in the bottom of the seventh off a single hit by Lauren Decker — the latter being the most productive member of HRV’s offense Friday, going 3-for-4 (singles). Haylee Baker, Madé Vallejo, Makena Zeller, Perkins, and Emilie Ellifritz also had a hit each for the Eagles (singles). The Eagles had a rough night on defense, committing five errors that helped Tigard get the win. Hannah McNerney pitched a complete game for HRV, striking out six and walking none while giving up 12 hits and six earned runs. The Eagles host Redmond (3-8) this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and then start league play Saturday with a doubleheader against Pendleton (10-2) at Westside that starts at noon.
Girls tennis squeaks by Parkrose
The HRV girls won by the thinnest of margins Thursday in a nonleague varsity match with Parkrose that had to be decided by total sets won as each team won two doubles and two singles matches at the end of the competition. The Eagles prevailed in total sets, beating Parkrose 82-66. In No. 1 singles, Olivia Newcomb won 6-6 (7-4), 6-1, while Montsie Garrido swept the No. 2 match. Nikki Paulus lost an extremely close No. 3 match (6-2, 5-7, 4-10), as did Jordan Zeigner in the No. 4 position (2-6, 6-6 with a 2-7 tiebreaker). The No. 1 and 2 doubles matches went to HRV with duo of Tia Semmes and Camryn Chambers taking the first match (6-3, 7-5) and Bianca Badillo/Kirby Joseph taking the second (6-4, 6-1). Adriana Vaca and Kayla Green were unable to get a win for HRV in the No. 3 position, losing 2-6, 3-6, while Ruby Dosier and Yasmeen Ziada barely lost the No. 4 match (5-7, 4-6). The girls host a league match with Pendleton this Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Boys tennis loses to La Salle
After getting swept by Ridgeview April 2, the HRV boys had a much better outing against La Salle, but weren’t able to pull out a win, losing 5-3 to the Falcons. Despite the loss, HRV Head Coach Jon Hiatt said he was “proud of the improvement that I saw on the courts over the past week.” The Eagles lost all of their singles matches and had trouble winning games as well. Simon Harsanyi lost 0-6, 1-6 in the No. 2 match, Carson Schutt was swept in the No. 3 match, and Soren Rajani lost 0-6, 1-6 at No. 4. Will Ferrick fared a little better in the No. 1 match, but lost both sets (5-7, 3-6). The Eagles did well in the varsity matches, though: Patrick Humann and Sawyer Bogard won at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1), Hugo Sandoval and Arthur Finstad won in the No. 2 slot (7-5, 6-3), while Chris Riviello and Charlie Bickford eked out a win in the No. 4 match (6-4, 7-5). Adam and Luke Harter lost 3-6, 1-6 in the No. 3 match. The boys travel to Hermiston on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. league match.
