Boys tennis slips by Benson Tech
HRV boys defeated Benson at Portland Tennis Center, 9-8, based on total sets won. HRV technically tied 4-4, but tiebreaker criterion goes to number of sets won.
In singles action, HRV’s Scottie Ziegner defeated Matt Nguyen 6-0, 6-1; Cooper Holzman lost to Truc Tran 2-6, 3-6; Marten Sova defeated Long Nguyen 6-2, 7-5 and Patrick Humann lost to Jak Sichandra 4-6, 2-6.
In doubles, HRV’s team of Edwards/Garibo lost to Johnson/Hoong 2-6, 0-6; De La Rosa/Cornejo defeated J. Nguyen/Hatchet 6-0, 6-4; Campos/Calderon defeated Vo/Chen 6-2, 6-3 and Shepherd/Sova lost to K. Nguyen/Le 6-4, 6-7(3), 2-10.
After traveling to Pendleton on Thursday, the boys are scheduled to host The Dalles-Wahtonka High School on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
HRVHS Nordic skier excels in Jr. Nationals
Juho Muhonen, 17, a Finnish exchange student who attends Columbia High School in White Salmon and races on the Hood River Valley High School Nordic Team, had a stellar performance at the 2014 Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships in Stowe, Vt., last month.
According to The Enterprise, Muhonen placed 12th in the 10K Classic, finishing in 29.44.6, placed 17th in the 10K Free with a time of 26.45.1, and placed 10th in his age group on the 1.3K course for Classic Sprints with a time of 3.20.26.
Muhonen, who competitively skied in his home country of Finland, told The Enterprise that the competition was fierce at the Junior Nationals and was much bigger than any Nordic skiing event in Finland that he’d participated in.
“This was the coolest race I’ve ever been to,” he said.
Men’s Golf Assc. holds first 2014 tournament
The Hood River Golf Men’s Association held its first tournament of 2014 on April 9. The par 3 tournament was held at Hood River Golf Course.
First place gross went to Tom Godwin; first place net was won by Bill Gillette, while second place went to Leonard Hickman. More tournaments are planned in the near future. The group is actively seeking new members; call the course at 541-386-3009 for details on playing times and how get involved.
HR 12U baseball shows offensive strength
Hood River Baseball’s 12U team traveled to Redmond to play in the Eagle Crest Classic over the weekend and came up just short of bringing home the hardware. On Saturday the boys played The Dalles Sluggers and won 8-3 on timely hitting and outstanding pitching from Greyson Losee and Ryan Gray. Their next game they beat the Bend Elks 17-7.
Offense was the name of the game in this one as Brandon Rivera hit two home runs as well as one by Losee. On Sunday the day started out against the Bend Lava Bears, the boys came out slow but warmed up in a hurry as they ended up winning in four innings on the mercy rule by a score of 13-3. Home runs by Juan Luis Jimenez and Ryan Gray helped seal this one. Into the semis Hood River faced the Rips Brewers of Seattle. Hood River gave up a large lead in the bottom of the fifth and ended up going into extra innings where they lost 21-20 in the eighth inning.
Hood River had over 40 hits on the weekend, including eight home runs in four games. Pitchers included Greyson Losee, Ryan Gray, Harrison Howell, Derek Homer, Brandon Rivera, and Payden Webster. The boys play a double header in Clackamas this weekend and play in the Knuckleball classic in The Dalles over the weekend of April 26.
Horizon beats HRV frosh on Totaro homer
Horizon Christian baseball team emerged the victor in a thriller Wednesday at Collins Field against the Hood River Valley High School freshmen.
HRV started the first inning with a leadoff solo home run by Micah Engel. The score stayed tied 1-1 through the third. In the fourth, HRV scored four runs on a succession of bases on balls.
Horizon had two outs in the bottom of the seventh down 5-1 when Amar Mann got the rally going with a shot between the shortstop and second, followed by Grant Lynn’s chip over the second baseman. Micah Engel loaded the bases with a single. RJ Hicks kept the rally going by batting in Mann and Lynn, making the score 5-3 with two on base. Matt Totaro came to the plate and knocked one over center field. The three-run walk-off homerun ended the game 6-5 in Horizon’s favor.
