THE GORGE — The ninth-ranked Dufur girls basketball team entered its Jan. 26 non-league game against Adrian riding a 13-game win streak and sitting atop the Big Sky League standings.
The Rangers (15-2 overall, 6-0 league) won three times this past week to maintain their one-game lead over Trout Lake (12-4, 5-1). The league wins against Sherman and Spray were sandwiched around a non-league win against Nixyaawii.
Trout Lake won three league games and lost a non-league contest in a five-day period last week. The loss was 50-31 at No. 4 Southwest Christian of Beaverton.
South Wasco County has asserted itself firmly atop the 10-team Big Sky boys standings, along with Ione/Arlington. Those two teams were scheduled to play Jan. 27 in Maupin. South Wasco is now ranked No. 4 in the OSAA rankings with a 16-2 record, 7-0 in the Big Sky. The Redsides, which have reeled off four wins since their last loss to Pilot Rock Ione/Arlington, are 12-4 overall and also unbeaten at 7-0 in league games.
South Wasco added a signature non-league win, 64-57, on Jan. 24 against 2A Stanfield. The Tigers (12-5) are the No. 5-ranked team in 2A. In that contest, South Wasco jumped out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter behind Jason Hull’s 10 points in the period. Stanfield would close to 57-55 late, but South Wasco sealed the win at the foul line. Hull finished with 35 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.
Klickitat/Glenwood improved to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in league with four straight wins after back-to-back losses to South Wasco and Horizon Christian. The streak included a thrilling 65-64 win at Lyle/Wishram.
The game was played before a near-capacity crowd in Lyle. Jack Thiemann’s two free throws pulled the hosts within 61-60 with 52 seconds left. Talon Cabral then made one of two free throws for Klickwood with 14 seconds on the clock. Carson Ramsay brought the ball up for Lyle and dished to Thiemann for a wide open three-pointer on the left wing to give Lyle a 63-62 lead.
Klickwood turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and had to foul with .05 on the clock. Lyle’s Mason Ramsay made the second of two free throws, giving Klickwood one more chance. After a timeout, Cabral took a long inbounds pass near mid-court, shot as he was turning to his right and made the basket as the buzzer was sounding.
