A mostly constant drizzle kept personal best times and marks to a minimum May 3 at the annual Al McKee Invitational track and field meet in Stevenson — but the weather couldn’t damper all of the events.
Columbia High was among the Gorge schools competing in the 10-team meet and the Bruins recorded one school record and a handful of personal records.
The school record came from freshman Lilah Zimmerman in the girls 1600 meters, which she won in 5 minutes, 23.63 seconds. Zimmerman took the lead early in the race and essentially ran by herself most of the four laps. Her brisk pace pulled along nine other runners to PRs. The group included Trout Lake freshman Melody Stock, who was second in 5:39.98.
Columbia sophomore Sara Miller ran to PRs in the 100 and 200 — 12.83 (first) and 26.43 (second) — and ran legs on the Bruins’ 4x100 and 4x200 relays. The short relay time for CHS was 50.96 seconds, which is close to the school record, and the 4x200 time was 1:50.17. Also on the relays for the Bruins were Bella Hamilton, Saylor Hauge and Sequoia Cohen. Hauge added a win in the 300 hurdles and was second in the high jump behind Trout Lake freshman Eden Anderson. Those two and Samantha Evans of Columbia each cleared 4 feet, 10 inches.
Among the other notable efforts, Jayden Kusky, a sophomore from Trout Lake, won a quality boys shot put with a personal best throw of 47 feet, 3.75 inches — besting Stevenson’s Hudson Holzhauer (46-3.5) and Klickitat’s Austin Fink (44-7). Goldendale senior Raymond Holycross won the 110 hurdles in a swift personal best of 15.51 and the 300 hurdles in 41.08. And Columbia senior August Lorincz won the 400 in 51.99, pulling away down the final straightaway, and he was third in the 200 (24.06).
There were plenty of other personal bests and quality competition throughout the events from Gorge athletes: Fink of Klickitat and Josiah Roberts of Horizon Christian finished 2-3 in the boys discus, Fink with a best of 131-7.5 and Roberts in a personal best 123-11.5. Horizon Christian junior Hannah Adams was second in the girls 100 hurdles in a school record 16.94 seconds. Trout Lake’s Violette Anderson won the girls shot put at 33-1.5. Columbia’s Madeline Allen won the girls discus with a throw of 91-6. Jade Mclean of Trout Lake was second in the pole vault at 9-0. Glenwood’s Giana Jackson leapt a PR 14-9 in the long jump. Horizon’s Aaron Johnson was third in the triple at a PR 36-11. Columbia’s Garrett Kock reached 18-2 in the long jump. Alex Lopez of Trout Lake won the boys 3200 in a PR 10:34.23 and teammate Ezra Sharp ran 44.77 in the 300 hurdles.
