OSAA 5A SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS Late-game heroics by Lauren Decker, Hannah McNerney send HRV to the 5A quarterfinals

HRV SOFTBALL PLAYERS crowd around Lauren Decker (No. 2, above) after hitting a two-out, walk-off single to complete HRV’s comeback victory over La Salle during Wednesday’s first-round playoff game.

A two-out, walk-off single by Lauren Decker was the perfect cap to the HRV softball team’s (No. 6, 18-10) impressive rally Wednesday, erasing a 2-0 deficit against the La Salle Falcons (No. 11, 17-11) to come back and win 3-2, propelling the Eagles into the quarterfinals of the 5A state tournament. HRV played Columbia River Conference rivals Pendleton (No. 3, 24-4) on the road Friday evening (results unavailable at press time), with the winner advancing to a semifinal matchup with either Putnam or Marist Catholic.

After errors helped put Kaylin Winans and Emilie Ellifritz on base, along with a crucial single by Lizzy Weekly, Decker plated Grace Miller and cleared HRV’s dugout after smacking the game-winner on a hard grounder to left field in the bottom of the seventh. Her teammates mobbed her at the pitcher’s mound, celebrating the Eagles’ first win in the state tournament since 2014.
