Hood River’s Orchard Lanes was the place to be last week. Bowling league action never ceases to amaze, and this Team of the Week is comprised of a perfect representation of our best keglers, regulars and new faces who are basking in the limelight for the first time.
Not too many years ago, Zach Mohun was a key player on our award winning Hood River Valley High School bowling team that nearly won the state championship. Zach didn’t get a lot of press for his role on the team, but he hung in there and he kept on bowling. It was just a matter of time; we knew he would shine very soon, and last week he put a stamp on that indomitable perseverance in the high flying Wednesday night Fraternal league — the best league in town — with a scratch 670 series that was capped with 248 and 235 games. Zach finished up 166 pins over his average, tops in town last week!
Smooth Carl Casey, the bowler whose epitomizes the phrase “let the ball do the work,” makes the big five for the third time this season after splashing a nifty scratch 704 set in the Monday night Industrial league. Carl made it all happen in his third and final game of the session, where he had the first 10 strikes in a row but just missed on that eleventh try, finishing up with a huge 289. Carl was 140 pins over his average for the outing. His 289 game was the highest individual game rolled at the lanes last week.
The ultimate hooking machine, Jeff Brittle, seized the third slot on our fab five. We’re not kidding when we say Jeff can hook the ball out of the building. Without a doubt he generates the biggest hook in town, and he sure had it talking in the Fraternal, where he pumped out a fine scratch 718 series, which was 121 pins over his average.
Our clean-up man this week is lefty Greg McDaniel. What more can we say about Greg other than he’s one of the top bowlers in the Northwest, who has proved his lofty reputation by winning a bunch of really big-time tournaments. Greg was firing on all twelve cylinders in the Fraternal last week, where he notched a big scratch 749 series which was 110 pins over his average. His 749 set was the highest three-game total posted at the lanes last week
Finally, we’re most proud of our anchor bowler, Kay Pratt. Kay is always right there, in the fray of the pin wars, week in and week out. She has long been a darn good league bowler. In the Thursday afternoon senior Lads and Lassies league last week she was so “en fuego” the pins couldn’t run and hide fast enough to get away from that mighty sphere of hers. In the process of scattering the sticks, Kay emerged with a sparkling scratch 212 game and ended up 110 pins over her average for her three game stint.
Congratulations are also in order for more round winners in our leagues. The Incredibowls team won the first round in the Thursday Hood River county league. Bowling for the Incredibowls are Rod Pratt, Ryan Pratt and Angie Welch. The Incredibowls just edged out the Dolls with Balls trio for the first round victory. In the Thursday afternoon senior Lads and Lassies league, the 3 Pugs team prevailed over the Bottom Feeders crew. Bowling for the 3 Pugs are Minnie Allen, Clifford Beat and Gordon Sim. These round winners deserve a mini celebration as they have now qualified to bowl in their respective league championship matches at the end of the season.
What do you think of these creative team names? Great bowling everybody!
