Sherman County senior Sophie Hulke won her third girls state discus championship last weekend and added a title in the shot put, as well.
Hulke joins an elite group of high school athletes who have won three state titles in the same event.
Hulke won the OSAA Class 1A discus crown on May 16 and a day later won the shot put at historic Hayward Field in Eugene. Hulke threw the discus 119 feet, 4 inches (36.37 meters) and the shot put a PR 38 feet, 8.75 inches (11.80 meters).
The Linfield University-bound Hulke has won three state discus titles, and also placed fourth in the shot put her junior year. She ended her prep career with five district throwing championships (three discus, two shot) and also placed fourth twice and fifth in the district javelin competition.
This year over two sunny days at state, Hulke scored 10 team points for each of her wins, as Sherman finished in a tie for 12th as a team with 20 points.
Trout Lake was 11th in the Class 1A meet with 24.5 points. The Mustangs were led by the Stock sisters, Myana and Melody, who scored 13 points between them. Senior Myana overcame a mid-season injury by placing fifth in the 1500 meters (5 minutes,15.39 seconds) and eighth in the 3000 (11:35.04 PR). Freshman Melody was fourth in the 3000 (11:22.74 PR) and sixth in the 1500 (5:17.49 PR).
Junior teammate Violette Anderson placed sixth in the shot put for Trout Lake, sophomore Lupe Medina was seventh in the 300 hurdles (she ran a PR 50.71 in the preliminaries on Thursday), and freshman Eden Anderson was eighth in the high jump. The Mustangs also were sixth in the 4x100 relay (Medina, Anderson, Jade Mclean, Nancy Painter) and sixth in the 4x400 relay (Medina, Mclean, Myana Stock, Painter) in a season best 4:25.89.
South Wasco County placed 19th in the girls meet, led by sophomore Jayda Iverson, who was fifth in the 800 in a PR 2:27.72, and sophomore Bailey Udey, who was fifth in the triple jump (32-11.5, 10.05 meters) and sixth in the long jump (15-6.5, 4.74 meters). Iverson also ran a PR 12:10.47 in the 3000 (9th).
Horizon Christian was led by junior Hannah Adams, who finished fifth in the high jump, sixth in the pole vault and eighth in the 100 hurdles. She set the Horizon school record in the hurdles at 15.97 in the preliminaries. Teammate Noelle Stasak, a sophomore, set a school record in the 1500 of 5:35.38 and also ran a PR in the 3000 (12:14.23).
Dufur senior Hailey Peterson placed eighth in the discus for the Rangers with a PR throw of 101-10.25 (28.86 meters).
Holloway, Dean pace 1A boys at state meet
Senior Joey Holloway of South Wasco County and Trout Lake junior Sawyer Dean paced Big Sky League boys track and field athletes at the May 16-17 OSAA Class 1A state meet in Eugene.
Dean won his third pole vault state championship, clearing a personal best 14 feet, 6.25 inches (4.43 meters) at historic Hayward Field. Holloway placed third in the javelin with a personal best throw of 158 feet, 4 inches (48.26 meters) and he was fourth in the discus at 136-2.25 (41.51 meters). Holloway added a ninth-place mark in the shot put with his 44-3.75 effort (13.51 meters). South Wasco’s Storm McCoy added one team point with his PR mark of 145-7.25 (44.38 meters) in the javelin. South Wasco was 21st as a team with 13 points.
Dean’s Trout Lake teammate, sophomore Jayden Kusky, was third in the shot put with a lifetime best throw of 48-5.5 (14.77 meters). The Mustang boys tied for 16th in the meet with 16 points. Trout Lake’s Alex Lopez added a personal-best mark at state in the 3000 of 9:54.44.
Horizon Christian had two boys placers in juniors Caleb Caldwell and Josiah Roberts. Caldwell, competing in his second state meet, placed seventh in the 3000 in a PR 9:36.55 on May 16. A day later Caldwell raced to a PR in the 1500 (4:25.77). Roberts placed seventh in the discus with a personal best throw of 126-11.5 (38.70 meters). Teammate Brayden Strong added a PR for the Hawks with his 2:07.64 time in the 800 prelims.
Klickitat’s Austin Fink was fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus, scoring nine points for the Vandals.Â
