After last year’s late start and abbreviated season, the Hood River Valley Snowboard Team is looking forward to hitting the slopes once again.
HRVST will have its first competition this Sunday at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort — a slopestyle competition that is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Sunday’s race marks a return to Mt. Hood Meadows after low snowfall during the 2015 season moved competitions to Timberline Lodge.
Assistant Coach Christy Field said this year’s team consists of 12 riders from three different high schools in the Gorge, with the vast majority coming from Hood River Valley High School. Returning to the team this year are HRV sophomores Niels Rasmussen and Elexis McAllister, along with seniors Edgar Castillo, Andy Schmidt, Santana Flores, Travis Duval, Jason Flores, and Gabe Cunningham. Also returning are Columbia High School junior Aleah Vaday and Horizon Christian School junior Thomas Foley. New to the team this season are Sebastian Garcia and Sean FitzSimons — both freshmen at HRV.
Coaches for the team this year besides Field include Connor Goodwillie , Michael Page, Reed Holyoak, Charles Mesecher, and Loretta Duke.
Field has high hopes that all members of the team will be able to find success this season.
“Last year we ended up with a number of riders going to state in Bend,” she said. “This year we are hoping to have all 12 riders qualify.”
The team’s next event after today’s meet will be a bordercross and banked slalom competition held at Meadows Feb. 7. State competitions are also at Meadows this year and will be held March 9-12.
In other news, Field said the team had a “great turnout” for a fundraiser held at Double Mountain last week. The team raised more than $600 in raffle ticket sales and received a $276 contribution from Double Mountain and a $100 donation from Hood River Fire and EMS. The team was also supported by 2nd Wind Sports, Dakine, Stoked Roasters, and The Underground Music Station.
