After a dominate 6-2 performance in the HRV girls tennis opening match of the season versus St. Helens on March 15, the girls “ran into a buzzsaw in a steady Sandy squad last week,” said head coach Erin Mason.
In four singles and five doubles matches, HRV fell on the road to Sandy by a final score of 7-2 on March 20.
“This was a good match for my girls,” said Mason, “as it helps keep us grounded in the fact there are always tougher teams out there.”
Of the Pioneers 12-person varsity roster, only two are seniors and “that’s what is so impressive about Sandy,” said Mason. “I have not seen a team in my four years as coach that has that much depth at the varsity level, and they are young.”
Against the Pioneers, Jordan Ziegner was the only HRV athlete to win a singles match, as she grinded out a three-set victory in the number three singles match.
“This was a huge test for Jordan,” said Mason.
The girls usually only play two sets and then a third set tie breaker to 10 points to decide a match, but versus Sandy, the Eagles would play a three-set series.
Ziegner won her first set 6-4 and then tied 6-6 in the second set.
In a second set tie break, Ziegner lost 2-7.
In the deciding final set, Ziegner swept the competition winning by a final of 6-0 to win the match.
“Jordan showed great concentration in that final set to stay in the game after dropping the second set,” said Mason.
In doubles, the Eagles also had one winner on the day: the number four team that consists of Megan Church and Silva Sankari.
Church and Sankari were down as much as 4-1 early in the first set, but a 6-1 run by the girls gave them the 7-5 victory in the first set.
In set two, Church and Sankari would go on to win by a final of 6-3.
Other HRV results versus Sandy: Montsie Garrdio (number one singles) lost to Fox from Sandy 4-6 and 3-6; Kirby Joseph (number two singles) lost to Krening 0-6 in both matches; JoJo Summerset (number four singles) lost to Twist 0-6 in both matches; Claire Oswald and Barrett Ihde (number one doubles) lost to Reiser and Stratton by final match scores of 4-6 and 3-6; Alivea Harsanyi and Ruby Dosier (number two doubles) lost to Donahue and Poulin by a final of 0-6 and 2-6; Sally Evans and Kali Wetherell (number three doubles) lost to Howes and Whitlock by final match scores of 1-6 and 3-6; Erica Matthison and Monica DeLaRosa (number five doubles) lost to Petravicious and Bryant by final match scores of 0-6 and 1-6.
“Some of my girls had an ‘off’ day,” said Mason. “But that happens in any sport you play.”
Only two games into the season, “the varsity lineup is still up in the air at this point,” said Mason. “I will be making some adjustments to make it the perfect fit for everyone on the roster.”
With the Eagles having their match versus Camas on March 23 rained out, this gives the team a couple of weeks of practice before their first conference match on April 4 at home versus Pendleton.
