HOOD RIVER — An eight-day break between games ends this week for the Hood River Valley boys basketball team — a team which looked like it needed a break in its latest outing.
The Eagles were scheduled to return to the court for their first game since Jan. 12 with a home contest, Jan. 20 against visiting Centennial.
Visiting Canby pulled away from host Hood River Valley in the second quarter of their Northwest Oregon Conference game Jan. 12, resulting in an 83-50 win over the Eagles. HRV (4-9 overall, 1-3 NWOC) stayed with the 7-6 Cougars early, behind the play of guards Talon Britt and JJ Poole. But Coach Christopher Dirks’ team was hurt by two Canby scoring bursts in each of the first two periods.
The first came with Hood River leading 12-10, fueled by Britt’s early six points. Canby closed the opening period on a 13-0 scoring run, behind its outside shooting and stingy half-court defense.
Then, in the second quarter, the Cougars used an 11-0 run to build a 38-19 lead. Poole stopped the spurt with a 3-pointer a little more than two minutes before halftime, but by then the damage was done, as Canby took a 42-22 lead into the break.
Hood River wasn’t finished effort-wise, making a mini-scoring run of its own at the end of the third quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Poole and Deacon Ybarra pulled the Eagles within 52-38. A short time later it was a 13-point margin after Britt scored, but Canby closed the period with a basket to make it 59-44. The Cougars then scored the next 20 points.
Poole finished with 16 points and Britt added 11.
The nine-team Northwest Oregon Conference boasts five teams ranked 14th or better among the state’s 33 Class 5A schools. Centennial (6-7, 2-2) is 14th and HRV’s Jan. 27 opponent (also at home), Parkrose (12-2, 5-0), is No. 2. The Eagles also play at Putnam (2-8, 0-4), a team they beat in a non-league game, on Jan. 22, and are at Milwaukie (7-6, 1-3) on Jan. 30.
