The 10-member The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls ski teams, guided by eighth-year Coach Dane Klindt, were led by the fifth-place boys finish by senior Henry Perez (54.38). Senior Connor Kovalchuck (1:25.54) was 46th in the boys event and junior Ari D’Arso was 51st.
Senior Cooper Klindt did not finish his first run, after he hit a rut near the third gate and lost one of his skis. Klindt had a solid second run at 26.70 seconds, which was the seventh-fastest run on Saturday.
Coach Klindt said, “It was great for all the kids to get back into the groove of racing and everything went pretty well for our team. The weather was pretty decent, and it wasn’t very cold [30 degrees]. It actually needs to be a little colder so that there’s a firm surface on the downhill sloped runs, but it turned out to be fine.”
The Dalles was missing two skiers, Faith Gouge and Jase Perez, who Klindt said are expected to be back with the team for the next race.
Riverhawk girls skiers Kaiya Doty, Kailee Klindt, Abril Rincon, and Riley Nordquist also competed at Mount Hood. Doty, a freshman, had a two-run time of 57.81 seconds to take 11th place. Klindt (59.43) finished three spots behind her teammate in 14th. Rincon, a sophomore, took 26th at 1:06.13, and Nordquist was 35th at 1:08.68. Riley’s brother Caden, an eighth grader on the Riverhawks boys team, took 43rd place at 1:24.40. (The results for eighth graders don’t count in the official standings of the OISRA.)
The next Mt. Hood Ski Race League is the Slalom Challenger event at Ski Bowl East on Jan. 28.
