Columbia High was within a score midway through the third period at favored Goldendale on Sept. 1, but the host Timberwolves responded with 28 unanswered points to pull away to a 50-15 win in a penalty- and turnover-marred football game.
Goldendale (1-0) led 22-15 before scoring four touchdowns over the final quarter and a half. A blocked punt and two Columbia (0-1) turnovers helped the home team build a commanding lead in a short amount of time.Â
Columbia never led in the contest, but a 90-yard punt return from Wongani Schlegel pulled the visitors within 9-7 on the final play of the first period. Schlegel fielded the punt from Goldendale’s Jacob Harris at the Bruin 10-yard line. He cut between two Goldendale defenders, as Columbia’s Bryce Wang and Petey Schlegel were opening a crease in the Timberwolves’ punt coverage.
A Braylon Childers block gave Schlegel a lane to his left and he cut that direction toward the Bruin sideline. Schlegel turned up field and used a final block from Yadier Ruiz on Harris at the Goldendale 45 to break free, and he then won a footrace to the end zone. Wyatt Selma added the point-after kick.
Schlegel also saved a touchdown in the third period, when his diving tackle jarred the ball loose from a Goldendale runner just as he was about to cross the Bruin goal line. Columbia moved the ball nearly the entire length of the field on its ensuing possession, aided by two long Jaden Wang to Sawyer Muehlbauer pass plays. The second toss moved the ball from the 19 to the 1, setting up Landon Castilla’s TD plunge on the next play. Castilla added the point-after conversion run to pull the Bruins within 22-15.Â
Neither team could sustain much offensive rhythm because of penalties, including numerous personal fouls.Â
Goldendale, winner of three straight in the series, received the ceremonial Klickitat County Cup after the contest.
Columbia will try to rebound on Sept. 8, when the Bruins host Stevenson – its rival to the west - in a game scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in White Salmon. The Columbia High boosters are hosting a community tailgate party from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. prior to the contest.
