The HRV girls lacrosse team had its first home game of the season Monday night and made it a memorable one, easily defeating the Cleveland Warriors, 13-2, at Henderson Community Stadium.
Cleveland (0-3) has experienced struggles on offense early this season, with opponents outscoring the Warriors, 41-5. That stayed true Monday evening, when the Eagles (2-0) scored a barrage of early goals that gave HRV a double-digit lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first half.
For the second game in a row, freshman attack Abby Bartles scored a hat trick and led HRV with three goals. She also recorded an assist, a ground ball and caused a turnover and won two draw controls.
Indicative of HRV’s characteristic unselfish play that Head Coach Andrew McElderry has complimented before, the Eagles’ 13 goals were divided amongst seven players. Also scoring for HRV were Savanna Brentlinger (2), Blair Holman (2), Kat McElderry (2), Lydia McElderry (2), Ellen Hudon (1), and Erin Mayer (1). Mayer also led the team in assists (3), draw controls won (3), and caused turnovers (2). She also recorded two ground balls.
Leading the team in the ground balls category were Victoria Kohner-Flanagan and Riley Bauer, who each had four.
Ella Rand started in net for HRV once again and was largely untested in the first half thanks to the offensive prowess of the Eagles. She stopped six of Cleveland’s eight total shots (75 percent).
The defeat of Cleveland was HRV’s second league win of the season, putting the team atop the Portland League standings as of Tuesday morning. With only 14 games (12 league) this season, every win is crucial.
HRV next hosts Wilson (0-1) this Thursday at 7 p.m. at Henderson Community Stadium and then faces Lincoln (0-2) on the road this Saturday.
