HOOD RIVER — So far so good for the Hood River Valley boys soccer team amid its three-game road swing before closing its regular season with senior night on Oct. 29 against visiting Sandy.
The eighth-ranked Eagles (7-5-1 overall, 2-1-1 Northwest Oregon Conference) won two away matches this past week — 4-1 at Milwaukie and 4-0 at Putnam — to move into third place in the league standings. HRV has a match remaining Oct. 27 at winless St. Helens before hosting Sandy two days later when seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
Hood River fell behind quickly at Milwaukie on Oct. 20, when Mustang midfielder Eric Gudino converted a 30-yard free kick into the far corner of the goal about a minute into the match. Coach Alvardo Lara’s Eagles picked up the pace, sparked by Miguel Lopez who scored and later assisted Benjamin Tama’s goal. Hood River took a 3-0 lead when Bryan Flores cleaned up a deflected save by the Milwaukie keeper.
HRV started faster two days later at Putnam. Anthony Hernandez set up Santiago Flores with service into the middle of the field. Flores controlled the ball and struck a right-footed liner from about 20 yards out past the keeper for a 1-0 HRV halftime lead. Kristian Gomez added a penalty kick late in the match to push the score to 3-0. Gomez was taken down in the right side of the penalty box after he controlled a long through-ball.
Trout Lake ends season
The Trout Lake/Horizon Christian boys soccer team lost its final regular season match and was eliminated from postseason play. The Mustangs finished 7-5-2 overall and 4-4 in 2A/1A Special District 1. They were ranked 13th in the final OSAA rankings, but missed out on the 10-team playoffs. Portland Christian beat Trout Lake/Horizon, 3-0, on Oct. 22, a day after the Mustangs had beaten Valor Christian, 4-1.
