HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s boys basketball team’s fast-paced style of play was embraced by Bend High School on Dec. 11, when the host Lava Bears won, 95-81, over the Eagles in Central Oregon.
It was HRV’s third successive loss – all to Bend schools – after a season-opening win against Portland’s McDaniel. The Eagles (1-3) host another Bend school — Mountain View — on Dec. 16 before playing at defending Class 6A state champion Barlow on Dec. 19.
Hood River’s best chance at a second win this season came on Dec. 9 at home against Caldera. The Wolfpack held a 60-55 lead before junior guard JJ Poole fueled an HRV comeback. Poole’s two free throws midway through the final quarter pulled the Eagles within 60-57. After Caldera’s Carter Garcia slashed for a dribble-drive basket, Poole’s three-point play with 2:58 remaining pulled the hosts within 62-60.
The teams traded free throws before Poole had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds. He dribbled away from a double team, but his runner from left to right into the lane bounced off the back of the rim.
Poole was joined in double-figure scoring by teammate Grant Dunn. His overall play and that of senior Cooper Wells inside, and reserve guard Jerry Serrano (seven first-half points) helped HRV to a 27-15 first quarter lead. The quarter scoring ended on a Talon Britt 3-pointer, one of three for him on the night.
But just as hot as was HRV in the opening period, the Eagles went cold in the second. It took Hood River almost six minutes to score its first field goal, and by that time, Caldera had taken a 31-28 lead. The Wolfpack led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, before HRV stormed back.
Britt hit a 3-pointer, as did Maverick Hockett, and the lead was 50-43, Caldera. Two Wells free throws and a Poole trey pulled Hood River within 54-48 with eight minutes remaining.
