Columbia High School’s track and field team continues to move athletes up the Trico League rankings as its plies mid-week meet schedule.
The Bruins were at La Center on April 10, when Coach Jim Anderson’s team recorded almost 60 personal bests and had eight individual winners. Leading the way on the boys side was senior Luke Harrison, who won the discus at 129 feet, 9 inches and the shot put at a PR 38-4.5. Harrison’s PR in the discus (136-5) is ranked No. 2 in the Trico. Teammate August Lorincz won the 400 meters in a personal best 53.39 seconds and was second in the 200 in 25.81.
Also on the track, junior Noah Slayton was sixth in the 1600 in 5:08.39. Columbia’s 4x100 relay of Petey Schlegel, Harrison, Graham Beck, and Wongani Schlegel placed second at 46.8.
The Bruin girls won seven events including two apiece by junior Saylor Hauge and Jessica Polkinghorn. Hauge won the 300 hurdles in 52.48 seconds and the 200 in 28.33. Her best times in those events are among the top four in the Trico. Polkinghorn threw a personal best and league leading 42-6 to win the shot put and added a first-place discus mark of 108-8. The Bruin senior leads the conference in that latter event, as well, at 113 feet. Senior teammate Madeline Allen continues her throws’ progression this spring, placing third in the discus (89-5.5) and fifth with a PR effort of 27-5.5 in the shot.
Freshman Samantha Evans cleared a personal best 4-10 to win the high jump. Evans is now one of three Bruin jumpers to top 4-8 this season, along with Hauge (4-10) and Hailey Tolbert (4-8). Tolbert added a win, zipping to a 18.41 in the 100 hurdles.
CHS’s other win came from sophomore Sara Miller, who won the 400 in a personal best 1:05.33, was second in the 100 at 13.3, and third in the long jump at 15-10.5 (personal best).
Of note: Coach Anderson’s Columbia girls team has at least one top-five ranked athlete in 12 of 13 individual events in the Trico best lists through April 14. The Bruins also have relays ranked in the top three in the league.
