Columbia High is riding a seven-game win streak into the boys district soccer playoffs, which begin this week.
The Bruins finished their regular season 9-1 in league play, 10-2 overall and ranked No. 6 in the state (WIAA-1A RPI). CHS plays a district playoff game at home on May 7 at 5 p.m. against the Elma Eagles (10-4, Evergreen League).
The last regular season test for the Bruins was April 30 when the King’s Way Knights came to White Salmon. Earlier this season, CHS went to King’s Way and left with a 3-2 win. King’s Way has played the Bruins tough at home the past few seasons, winning the past four contests at Columbia.
That streak ended last week, when CHS won, 3-0. The defense started the game looking shaky. A few errant passes from jittery Bruin play resulted in a couple of quality chances early in the game for King’s Way. The best opportunity for the Knights came from King’s Way’s Luke Gomes, who missed a shot just wide of the goal.
After the initial few minutes of the game, goalkeeper Alfonso Serrato and the CHS backline of Damian Sanchez, Alex Baldwin, Cole Wooding, Ricardo Diaz, and Juan Santoyo-Luna settled down and played tough, physical defense that stifled Kings Way’s attack for the remainder of the contest.
At the 25-minute mark of the first half, Isaac Reynoso received a long pass from Uli Huerta, dribbled across the 18-yard box, and took a left-foot shot from a difficult angle that bounced off the goal’s upright and in for the game’s first score.
At halftime, seniors Nathan Chambers, Charlie Hooper, Diaz, Alfonso Serrato, Luke Miller, Angel Cortes, and Angel Flores were honored for their contributions to the program.
The Bruins had some nice buildup play in the second half that yielded a Wooding pass from the left side to Humberto Pulido, who slotted the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0. A few minutes later, Luke Miller flicked a header on to a slashing Flores, who notched the game’s third and final goal.
In the final game of the regular season on May 2, the Bruins travelled to Winlock-Toledo United. The Bruins were contained in the first half which saw some solid chances for CHS but no goals. In the second half, Luke Miller opened the goal-scoring flood gates for the Bruins. Matt Miller, Isaac Reynoso, Manual Barajas, Matthew Carrillo, and Cortez added goals for a 6-0 win.
