THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks (2-1) started this season similarly to last year when they won their first two OSAA Class 4A football nonleague contests.
But for the second successive season, that 2-0 start has been tempered by a week No. 3 loss to Astoria. The visiting Fishermen (1-2) outplayed The Dalles, 32-6, on Sept. 12 at Sid White Field on the Wahtonka Campus. The result was eerily similar to a matchup a year ago, which Astoria won at home, 29-0, on Sept. 13, 2024.
Although they had home field advantage, it made little difference for the Riverhawks in the loss to the Fishermen. Astoria scored a touchdown in each of the first two quarters and then added two more scores in the third period to take a 25-0 lead.
Trailing 32-0 in the fourth quarter, the Riverhawks avoided a shutout with a two-play scoring drive. The Dalles sophomore running back Bryson Cates scored on a 39-yard touchdown run with 1:46 remaining in the contest.
The Riverhawks have a bye this week allowing second-year head Coach Nate Timmons and his assistant coaches two weeks to prepare the Riverhawks for their next nonleague contest - 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at home against No. 12-ranked Philomath (1-1). The Warriors, a 2024 state playoff quarterfinalist, won 56-0 over the Riverhawks last season.
