The eight local Class 1A boys basketball teams resumed their schedules last week with each squad playing three or four games.
The lengthy weather-related layoff didn’t affect the No. 7-ranked undefeated Sherman Huskies, who won three more Big Sky League contests. The Huskies (6-0 league, 17-0 overall) continued to roll over their opponents, as they won all three games by 20 or more points.
Playing their first game since Jan. 6, the Huskies won at home Jan. 23, 57-37 over the Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler High Eagles (3-3 league, 10-6 overall), followed by a 53-21 road win over the Trout Lake High Mustangs (1-5 league, 5-12 overall). Sherman capped its 3-0 week with a 63-27 home win over the South Wasco County High Redsides (2-6 league, 7-11 overall).
The Huskies, who are the only unbeaten team in Class 1A, will try to extend their win streak in their next matchup Tuesday versus the Horizon Christian High Hawks (6-1 league, 8-6 overall) in Hood River.
Dufur extends win streak to 10
The No. 14-ranked Dufur High Rangers extended their win streak to 10 after winning three more contests last week. The Rangers (8-0 league, 13-2 overall) won at home Jan. 23, 63-24 over Trout Lake. The Rangers were led offensively by senior Olson Meanus, who scored a career-high 24 points.
Senior JJ Johnston added 13 points for Dufur. Rowen Huff (10 points) and Dylan Nortz (15) led the Mustangs’ offense.
Dufur, the Big Sky West Division leader, then faced the third-place team from the East Division in road matchup at Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler. The Rangers won that game, 57-51, and followed with a 55-24 home win on Jan. 27 over the Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (1-5 league, 3-11 overall).
South Wasco gets a split
The Redsides won two of four games last week, including a 55-52 road win over Lyle/Wishram Jan. 23. Joey Holloway scored a career-high 29 points to help lead the Redsides to the victory. Jack Thiemann led the Cougars in scoring with 26 points.
The Redsides then played Jan. 24 at Condon and lost, 58-41. The Blue Devils took control of the matchup when they outscored the Redsides 28-11 in the third quarter. Holloway (14 points) and George Barnett (12) led the Redsides in scoring.
Horizon extends win streak to six
The Hawks won three games last week to extend their win streak to six in a row. Horizon won 67-37 on the road over Klickwood at Glenwood High School on Jan. 23. Senior Mason Bates led the Hawks with 25 points. Sophomores Jerry Serrano had 16, Landon Whitaker scored 11, and Ben Chapman added eight.
The Hawks then played back-to-back contests and won a Jan. 26 game 60-40 over the host Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (1-5 league, 3-11 overall) at Arlington High School. Bates led the Hawks with 30, followed by senior Logan Ensbury with nine. The Hawks then faced Klickwood again Jan. 27 at home and they recorded a season-high point total in a 71-58 victory. Bates scored 31, Chapman scored 12, Serrano had eight and Ensbury scored seven.
Trout Lake drops four straight
The Mustangs lost three games last week, extending their losing streak to four. Following losses to Dufur and Sherman, the Mustangs then lost a tough matchup 63-46 at Condon Jan. 27. The Mustangs had only eight players available in the contest and then had three players foul out in the game. Sophomore center John Crow suffered a knee injury late in the game and he was unable to continue playing, leaving the Mustangs with just four players for the final 90 seconds of the contest. Condon Coach Teren Humphrey displayed very good sportsmanship while having four players in the lineup for the final one and half minutes of the game. Nortz (17 points) and Huff (16) led the Mustangs in scoring.
