Noah Noteboom photo/fileThe Sherman/Condon/Wheeler High Huskies won a third straight Class 1A baseball game with a 7-6 home win in extra innings over the visiting Union/Cove High Bobcats on March 27 in Moro.
The Huskies (3-1), guided by Coach Joe Justesen, overcame a 3-0 third inning deficit, outscoring the Bobcats (1-3) 6-3 over the final five and a half innings.
“It was a good back-and-forth type of game in which they [Bobcats] got ahead early and then we battled back to make it close,” Justesen said. “In the eighth inning, we didn’t even get one hit, but we had a walk, a stolen base, and then we scored the winning run on an error by the Bobcats. You just do whatever you can to get the win.”
Condon High senior Brody Geer (1-for-2, three walks) drew a lead-off walk and then scored the winning run on an error for a 7-6 win.
Starting pitcher Leven Whitbeck and freshman reliever Drake Dark combined for 12 strikeouts, nine hits allowed and two walks. The Bobcats outhit the Huskies 9-7. The Huskies offense was led by senior Zander Berglund (2-for-4, two RBI), Condon’s Blake Carnine (1-for-4, RBI), Talon Dark (1-for-5), Caiden Walker (1-for-2) and Whitbeck (1-for-4), a Wheeler County High junior.
“The boys battled good and we just kind of held our own and they didn’t panic. We got some hits when we needed to and scored some runs, and we ran the bases very well (five steals],” Justesen said.
The Huskies play an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday versus the Rangers at Dufur High School.
“Dufur is one of those teams that’s kind of scary,” Justesen said. Last season the Huskies won three games versus the Rangers, including two by double-digit margins.
