Visiting The Dalles High built a big lead early before having to hold off a late Hood River Valley rally to survive a non-league girls basketball game Dec. 22 at Vannet Court, 31-30. The Riverhawks, who won their 10th straight in the Gorge rivalry series, improved their season record to 2-1 with the win. Hood River, which trailed by as many as 12 points early, found a spark late in the second quarter, carrying over into the second half. The Eagles started playing more aggressively, especially on offense, and slowly came back from the early deficit.
Hood River Valley’s girls basketball team begins its initial season in the Northwest Oregon Conference on Wednesday, when the Eagles will face another league newcomer.
Trailing by 10 points twice in the third quarter, the Hood River Valley girls basketball team methodically whittled away at the deficit and won its first game Saturday afternoon, 45-41 at Crook County in Prineville.
The Hood River Valley girl’s basketball off-season was driven by last year’s results. The Eagles are led by head Coach Steve Noteboom, who has been at the helm since 2019. Last season the team started strong winning three of their first four games and entered conference play with an even 5-5 record. A tough Intermountain Conference (IMC) league held the Eagles winless in the second half of the year.
The Hood River Valley High Eagles are hoping that their recent slump (losing five of the past six games) is over and now they’re focusing on gaining momentum to try and achieve their goal of qualifying for the upcoming OSAA Class 5A softball state playoffs.
A difference in one or two possessions often means the difference in the outcome of a basketball game. Hood River Valley knows that all too well after losing two close girls contests this past week.
