Super scooper

There were four super scoopers using the reservoir behind The Dalles Dam Friday afternoon, Aug. 14, to scoop up water to dump on the Grasshopper Fire to the south. This firefighting aircraft has just filled up and is gaining altitude. In the background are the darkened remnants of the Horsethief Fire that happened on May 26.

 Emergency thanks

I would like to thank the staff of the emergency room at Adventist Health Columbia Gorge for the professional and compassionate care given to my family on the day that my husband Phil Brady died, May 19, 2026. From the doctors to the nurses and staff, as well as the spiritual care person, our family was treated with great kindness. I am especially grateful for the care and privacy given to our family as we awaited our daughters to arrive from out of town. As both county commissioner and a former board member of the hospital, Phil strongly believed in and worked towards accessibility in rural healthcare. I know he would have felt proud of the teamwork displayed by the staff. It is a beautiful circle coming around that the very healthcare team he worked diligently to support is the team that took care of him on his last day. Thank you.
