In your February 9 article on upcycling and recycling by Holly Morris, we missed a great opportunity to mention the StRUT program in The Dalles. That’s ‘Students Recycling Used Technology’. StRUT is a not for profit organization that provides technology education, resources, and recycling to schools across Oregon and Southern Washington. StRUT’s backbone of operations is collecting used technology equipment to be redeployed for use in schools or responsibly recycled. StRUT uses the revenue from sales of recoverable commodities harvested from the computer parts to fund our programs and provides allocations of re-usable computers and peripherals to schools helping to make technology more accessible for students.
Nearly every school in Wasco County is a member, as well as the schools in Hood River and Klickitat counties. Items donated to StRUT will be processed for re-use by students, or if they are at the end of their useful life, recycled responsibly. StRUT takes donations of used technology items from individual donors as well as municipalities and corporations. Donating useful, obsolete, or even broken items keeps those items out of the landfill and provides opportunities for students.
Cell phones, toner cartridges, keyboards, printers as well as computers and routers are welcome. Our facility where we collect and break down used technology donations is right here in The Dalles, out at the old Petersburg School. Donating to StRUT is a great opportunity to “go green” and help out schools.
StRUT is on pace to recycle 500,000 pounds of e-waste this fiscal year and provide over 1000 computers to member schools. Even the Chronicle sends their technology to StRUT when they are ready to part ways. As rule of thumb, if it is a computer, or ever connected to one, chances are StRUT can put it to good re-use.
