Mistaking the intentions of two would-be holdup men saved Richard Brouhard, local photographer, loss of a considerable sum of money last night at 9 o’clock, he reported to police. The bandits who attempted to rob him near the city park were described as being about 20 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches in height and dressed in ordinary clothes.
Brouhard was on his way home with some cash and a large number of checks in his pocket when two men standing on the steps leading down into the city park from Union street suddenly accosted him, one of them grasping the lapels of his coat while the other stood several feet away drawing a large revolver from his hip pocket. It happened so suddenly that Brouhard did not realize for some moments that the pair meant business, and the delay in making the photographer understand that he was being held up caused the bandits to lose their nerve.
Brouhard, sensing that they were frightened, questioned them as to their motive, and when they said they wanted money because they were hungry, he gave them 50 cents apiece and they walked away. The near victim attempted to follow the pair but lost track of them in the down town district. Police and railroad detectives questioned all vagrants found on the streets last night and raided the “jungles” without finding any race of the holdup men.
