THE DALLES — Last Thursday, North Wasco County School District 21 (D21) teachers and employees gathered at the April 25 regular school board meeting in a show of solidarity. Representatives from the North Wasco Educational Support Professionals and D21 Education Association presented a joint report to the board regarding issues including transparency in contract negotiations, supporting fellow district employees and classroom behavioral issues. Columbia Gorge News will have ongoing coverage of these topics.
In other business, the North Wasco County School Board read a statement on the annual superintendent evaluation. In accordance with School Board Policy CBG, the board must conduct at least one formal evaluation of the superintendent per year, with the evaluation being based on “the administrative job description, any applicable standards of performance, board policy and progress in attaining any goals for the year established by the superintendent and/or the board.”
Read by Board Chair David Jones in the meeting, the evaluation focused on eight professional standards of performance for superintendent, as well as three professional goals. The evaluation consisted of both a self-evaluation provided by District Superintendent Carolyn Bernal, and the board’s direct observations and experiences with her. This year marks Bernal’s third evaluation.
“Overall, the board’s evaluation found that the performance of Superintendent Bernal on eight professional standards was effective,” Jones said. “The board also determined that Superintendent Bernal has done an effective job of working towards the North Wasco County School District 2023-25 Integrated Guidance Plan LPTGs, monitoring and supporting the North Wasco County School District 2027 Strategic Plan in their 23-24 priorities and working collaboratively with the board to update and sign the superintendent board operating agreement. The board will be working with Superintendent Bernal over the next several months to develop new goals for the district. And we look forward to working together to continue making the district successful.”
