SHERMAN CO. — The Sherman County Court is more than a center of local government: Each spring, it also doubles as a student art gallery, with the annual theme of “Why I Love Sherman County.”
“In our courtroom this year, I have 127 pieces of art from the grade school, junior and high school,” said Judge Joe Dabulskis. As county judge, he’s the county’s chief administrator, leading a county court similar to a county board of commissioners. The courthouse is located in Moro, the county seat.
Several years ago, a third grade student, responding to a school assignment, wrote to Dabulskis and requested an art display in the courtroom. “I wrote back to him, and it’s been going ever since. He’s a seventh grader now.”
Court Assistant Tammi Gaskey organizes the event each year, Dabulskis said, and deserves the credit.
“They all draw pictures: ‘I love Sherman County because … We’ve got towns, sunrises, hunting and fishing, wind farms.’ I see different pictures every time. It’s pretty amazing,” he said.
This year’s student art will be on display through April 30, and people are welcome to stop by and vote for their top five favorites. Artists with the most votes will win prizes. The courtroom is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
