Great Falls businesses offer meals, haircuts, and coffee on credit to support federal workers during shutdown

“What we want to do is hold your tab,” said owner Adam Hawley. “You don’t have to pay today. Once you get to your second paycheck after the shutdown, then we’ll charge you.”

Hawley, who owns the bar with his wife, is a former Air Force service member. He said he understands the financial strain that can come with a missed paycheck — especially for those just starting out.

“It was 1999 when I first came to Malmstrom. I could barely provide for myself,” he said. “Now that it’s 26 years later, I can.”

Federal workers — military and civilian alike — simply need to show proof of employment to open a tab, allowing customers to enjoy a meal without the immediate financial burden.

“With your first check, you’ve got your mortgage, your utilities,” Hawley said. “For a $20 burger and a beer, I can wait two weeks. It’s more about taking care of your family.”

The offer will remain in place for the duration of the shutdown, and all tabs will be processed 2 days after workers receive their second paycheck post-shutdown if they don't come in and pay it beforehand.

Hawley says anyone who pays their tab in the first paycheck will get a free drink.

Backroads Bar and Grill isn’t the only local business offering support to furloughed workers.

Tortitude Salon, also in Great Falls, is offering delayed payments for essential grooming services. The salon is inviting military members and federal employees to reach out directly.

“If you are in need of a haircut or basic color while the government is shut down, please reach out,” the salon said on Facebook. “I can start an account that will be due 30 days after the government becomes active again. Let’s keep moving forward together.”

Heroes Rise Coffee Company is also showing its appreciation. The local coffee shop is offering 50% off all drinks for government employees and their families during the shutdown.

“Because we know this time can be tough, we want to do what we can to lift your spirits — and your caffeine levels,” the company shared on Facebook. “Stop by, grab a drink, and know that your Heroes Rise family appreciates everything you do for our communities and our country.”

From burgers to buzz cuts to brews, small businesses in Great Falls are working together to support those who serve.
