Gary Conley recognized last week’s History Mystery as The Dalles bridge over the Columbia, probably taken in the early 1950s when the bridge opened, with the photographer standing by Highway 30. Conley noted that initially, the bridge was planned closer to where Seufert Park is now. Construction began, and you can still see the piers built at that initial location.

After it was decided to build The Dalles Dam, those structures were abandoned and construction of the bridge moved to its current location. There’s no sign of the Shiloh in that photo, Conley noted.
