THE GORGE — Residents and small business owners in Wasco, Hood River and Sherman counties will soon have the chance to safely dispose of toxic and hazardous materials at two upcoming collection events hosted by the Tri-County Hazardous Waste & Recycling Program.
The events will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, at Hood River Garbage, and Saturday, Aug. 16, at The Dalles Disposal. Both events are open to households and qualifying small businesses in the tri-county area.
The program will accept a wide range of items, including products labeled with warnings such as “caution,” “warning,” “danger,” or “poison.” Accepted materials also include septic and drain cleaners, oven cleaners, gasoline, kerosene and other fuels, automotive fluids, pool and spa chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, thermometers, art supplies, hobby chemicals, and more.
Formed in 2003 through an intergovernmental agreement, the program was created to provide a safe and accessible way for local residents and businesses to dispose of hazardous materials. Wasco County serves as the lead agency. Since opening its permanent facilities in Hood River and The Dalles in 2006, the program has also conducted regional satellite collection events and accepts pesticide waste from farmers and ranchers.
These efforts help prevent harmful substances from ending up in landfills, waterways or residential trash, while encouraging safe disposal habits throughout the community.
Pre-registration is required to attend. For a full list of accepted items, event details, or to register, visit tricountyrecycle.com/HR&TD.
