Rockford Grange's fifth annual Seed Share is on Saturday, March 10 from 1-5 p.m.
The event brings together a wide range of local and heirloom varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs (all non GMO and many organic) available free to home gardeners. The event is free, and anyone may bring extra seeds to share. There will be demonstrations and information about seed starting and seed saving, and Master Gardeners will be available for Q and A. Kids activities will include felting and soil blocking, and tea, coffee and treats will be available
Another seed-saving themed event will also be happening at the Rockford Grange as part of their Friday Farm Film Fest on March 16. In collaboration with Gorge Grown Food Network, there will be a showing of the Brazilian film “Ciclovida: Lifecycle.”
Soup will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the film begins at 6:30 p.m. Community conversation will follow with panelists; admission is a $10 suggested donation.
Organizer Aera Atkins described the feature-length documentary as one that “pedals alongside a group of small farmers from Brazil who bicycle over 6,000 miles across the South American continent to share seeds and moving stories with landless peasants, indigenous communities, and small farmers who face the struggle to survive in the face of global agribusiness incursion and the takeover of monocrops for making biofuel.
“Peer into the lives of Inacio and Ivania, who are farmers, poets, musicians, parents, and activists for ecological and social justice. They seek to gather and disseminate thousands of seeds, a wealth of knowledge, and contribute to an invaluable network of small agricultural communities in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, all without the use of oil or biofuels. With practically no money and no support crew, the cyclists rely entirely on their resourcefulness and the solidarity of people they meet along the way.”
