Calling all Hood River Valley High School, as well as Hood River High and Wy’east High grads, and anyone else wanting to see some traditional Friday Night Lights pageantry.
This is HRVHS Homecoming Week 2015: there’s a big game Friday night – the final non-conference game for Eagle football, versus McKay of Salem.
Waterpolo, volleyball, and soccer teams also are hosts for their competitions this week as well.
This week for Homecoming you might see students around town dressed up as cartoon characters or hipsters, or in tie-dye or good old blue and gold as each day brings a new dress-up theme. It’s for fun, and also for points and bragging rights: all four HRVHS classes try to rack up points for hall decorating, dance-off, Bonfire games, pie eating contest, daily dress-up, and the much-awaited Air Guitar event on Thursday.
The only Homecoming events open to the public are athletic contests this week, culminating in the Friday coronation and concert in the grandstands by the HRVHS band, under new director Daniel Kenealy.
The band will take the field for “Uptown Funk” and one additional selection then some fanfares as the homecoming court is introduced.
“It is the only game of the year in which the band marches on the field,” said Dan Kenealy, first-year music director at HRVHS. “It will be a great opportunity for the community to get to hear what band has been working on in their first few weeks of school. I think it is going to be a fun halftime event and I am looking forward to having the band on the field.”

Of note for students is Thursday’s Button Day, one of the trickier ways to earn points for the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes: boys must relinquish their buttons and, hence, points if they talk to a girl from another class. Girls earn points for getting boys from other classes to talk to them.
Big events for the students also include Wednesday’s Bonfire, with mattress races, truck push and other events, and Friday’s Tailgate party just before the game.
