THE GORGE — The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association’s (CGOA) vocal ensemble, Voci Community Choir, will perform their winter concert “On This Shining Night” three times this holiday season, debuting at Hood River Valley Christian Church on Dec. 12-13 and returning at The Dalles Civic Auditorium on Dec. 14.
“This luminous and heartfelt program explores the beauty, warmth, and hope found in light during the darkest months of the year,” said a press release. “Audiences of all ages are invited to join Voci for an unforgettable evening of choral artistry, stirring works, seasonal glow, and communal joy as we celebrate the power of illumination — both literal and metaphorical.”
Under the creative direction of Dan Kenealy, Voci has become known for expressive performances and thoughtful, diverse programming. “On This Shining Night” draws inspiration from Morten Lauridsen’s poem and invites listeners on a reflective journey shaped by serenity, warmth, and the shared human experience.
The program will include “Sure on This Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen; “Glow” by Eric Whitacre — a shimmering contemporary favorite composed for the World of Color Honor Choir; a cappella and accompanied works exploring themes of light, peace, and winter reflection; contemporary selections composed and/or arranged by local composers Duncan Krummel and Linda Taylor; and an audience singalong.
“This concert shines from within. Each piece offers its own perspective on light, and together they create an atmosphere of warmth and connection,” Kenealy said. “In a time of year when we often seek comfort and community, this program is an invitation to pause, reflect, and experience beauty together.”
Tickets for “On This Shining Night” are available online or at the venue on the day of the performance. Advance purchases are recommended. CGOA offers free admission for children and students with ID. Regular ticket prices are $25, and $20 for CGOA members.
