Congratulations, and a caution, came from President Pat Hesgard of the Columbia Gorge Lions Club as the group last week reviewed the successful Sternwheeler Days 2014 event, the group’s annual major project.
“We needed a lot of help and we had volunteers from the community and Lioness Club. This is a major event which takes a lot of time and effort. We are going to have to get more members if we want to continue with Sternwheeler Days,” Hesgard noted.
During the visit by District Governor Gerald Hopkins, community volunteers for Sternwheeler Days were recognized with special certificates. Those volunteers included: Robbie Lee, Mary Ann Bump, Cindy Mitchell, Joann Wittenberg, Maryann VanSickle, Barbara McCubin, Megan Webb, Ken Wittenberg, Bob Jung, Lorraine Massey, Rudy Verschuren, Sheldon Price, Todd Mohr, Rob Brostoff, Mary Hutton, Pete Carr, Phil Shay, and Raunchy and Liska Crowley.
Hopkins presented a 40-year Monarch Chevron to Kerry Bennett and a 20 year Monarch Chevron from Lions International to Pat Hesgard. The governor also recognized Al Jackson with as Outstanding Lion for continuous involvement in club activities. Lions members have listed the Sternwheeler Days, scholarships, eye glasses, Old Timers Picnic, and BINGO as their favorite projects; and Meals on Wheels and beautification of various areas as projects the club might consider.
Hopkins read an article extracted from the MID-Columbia Gorge Newsletter of May 2012. In part it read, “After attending city council meetings, President Pat Hesgard inquired if there was a group in town that would sponsor a Candidates’ Forum. Someone in the audience mentioned that the Lions might sponsor such an event.” Hopkins said that it was extremely important to keep the club going for the community. “It is obvious from the article that when something needs to be done, then the community looks to the Lions Club for help. We will work to get new members for your club.” Hopkins also reminded the group of many of their projects including $2,100 for a speed machine and trailer, $2,000 for a play area in a local park, $4,000 for tennis courts and backstop for a ball diamond, support for the Christmas tree giving and food bank. “Above that,” Hopkins said, “you have been able to keep the Sternwheeler Days going for the community. This club is important for this beautiful community.”
