HOOD RIVER — Aaron and Rachel Carter, owners of Columbia Gorge Toyota / Honda in The Dalles, were recognized by Hood River County School District (HRCSD) at the Jan. 22 board meeting.
Hood River County Education Foundation Board Member Mike Schend presented along with HRCSD Human Resources Director Gus Hedberg. “These two are very community minded,” Schend said.
The couple has donated a new car to HRCSD and North Wasco County School District 21 (NWCSD) since 2022. Both district education foundations then give teams and clubs an opportunity to sell raffle tickets for the vehicle to raise money for their programs.
This year, the Carters are donating the car just to HRCSD; next year, the car will go to NWCSD, Schend said.
Aaron Carter said the couple purchased the dealership in 2019, moving to The Dalles from Idaho. “We knew we wanted to be involved in the community,” he said. “Mike’s enthusiasm for the district is infectious … We want to do what we can do to give back to this area that has given so much to us.”
“Nobody does education alone, anywhere,” said Director Chrissy Reitz. “And so, not to have the support of community, and then wonderful community partners, businesses — we can’t emphasize enough how much of a difference it makes to our students, really helping them to have some opportunities they wouldn’t have [otherwise]. Your generosity is overwhelming.”
Hedberg additionally thanked Schend for the foundation’s work with the raffle. “I know you put a lot of effort into this as well,” he said.
