As I wrap up my time with Columbia Gorge News, I figured the best way to reflect is by sharing some of my favorite pictures that I have captured while working in the Gorge.
Over the course of my four years with CGN, I have taken and edited more than 10,000 photos. Not all of them have been published, but I have saved every photo that made my final cut. My role has expanded from a rookie reporter to sports editor, designer, and even delivery driver from time to time, but photography quickly became one of my favorite aspects of journalism. I view photojournalism as a challenge. How can I get the best photo that represents the story I am about to tell? I learned the power of capturing a subject’s emotions and how that impacts the story.
I chose the pictures included here for various reasons. Some have lots of color, some show emotion, and some show good composition, but all of them show the joy and humanity in all of our communities. You can feel the joy shown by Hood River Valley student Isis Stenn, who was crowned Homecoming Royalty; or the young athlete learning to shoot a basketball during the Bilingual Basquetbol camp at Mid Valley Elementary, and the fruit workers who sort and pack the fresh pears and apples picked from the orchards. All of us make an impact in someone else’s life. Make sure it is a positive impact.
I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor and if you have questions about any of the photos, please email me! I am moving to Eugene with hopes of landing another job in the journalism industry; however, I am going to continue reporting on the Port of Hood River and the Bridge Replacement Project for the time being. Until then thank you to Chelsea Marr, Trisha Walker, LisaAnn Kawachi and everyone else who has helped me grow as a journalist. I love you Hood River!
