Yellowstone‘s series finale tagline was, “Generations of blood have led to this.” Indeed, Yellowstone and its two spinoff prequels, 1883and 1923, showed the Dutton family’s lives on the ranch dating back to when the family home was first built. 1883 explored how they came to Montana from Tennessee, 1923 showed them protecting the property through the difficulties of the Great Depression, and Yellowstone was the modern-day display of the slowly dying ranching way of life. The ranch is now sold, but the family’s legacy lives on in the present-day spinoffs, Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Warning: Spoilers for the Yellowstone TV universe ahead.
1923 Season 2’s premiere brought viewers one step closer to finding out who John Dutton II’s parents could be. But the reveal of another pregnancy in subsequent episodes stretched out this lingering question up until the 1923 Season 2 finale, when John Dutton II’s parents were revealed. We’ve compiled the many generations of Duttons in the graphic below to help you keep track of the family lineage while watching the Yellowstone TV universe.
You’ll see that some characters, like John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) mother, don’t have photos or aren’t named. That’s because the character names have never been revealed and/or they’ve never been an onscreen character. Oddly enough, Yellowstone has never revealed the name of John III’s mother, but we do know that she and her husband had a second baby who died just hours after his birth. That baby’s name was Peter, as John revealed in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1. There are also new, important figures revealed in the 1923 finale that are unnamed but play a major role in Spencer’s (Brandon Sklenar) family tree.
You’ll also see below that Dawn Olivieri, who plays Sarah Atwood in Yellowstone, is among the 1883 characters. Yes, she played a Dutton sibling before she ever played a Dutton enemy! Olivieri can be seen as Claire in 1883, sister to James (Tim McGraw) and Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford). Claire and her daughter, Mary Abel (Emma Malouff), died in 1883.
There was another tragic death in Marshals, the Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) spinoff on CBS. His wife, Monica Long Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), died of cancer after the events of the Yellowstone series finale and one year before the start of the Marshals plot. Kayce is now raising their teenage son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), on his own.
1923 showed the generation of Duttons that John Dutton II (father of John Dutton III) was born into. In the Season 2 (series) finale, Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) gave birth to her and Spencer’s son prematurely. She was only 6 months along in her pregnancy, but the preemie baby survived. She named him John Dutton II after Spencer’s late brother, confirming the long-held fan theory that Spencer and Alex are the grandparents of John Dutton III. John Dutton II is seen at the end of his life in Yellowstone, played by the late Dabney Coleman (who died in May 2024).
Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) was pregnant at the finale’s end as well, but the fate of that pregnancy was left unknown. Elizabeth left Montana for Boston following Jack Dutton’s (Darren Mann) death. Alex also tragically died in the finale after giving birth, but not because of it. Her limbs had gone necrotic from frostbite, and she opted out of amputating her legs and hand — a surgery that would have saved her life. She died after spending one night with Spencer and their son in the hospital.
Narration from Elsa Dutton (Spencer and John I’s older sister, played by Isabel May in 1883), revealed that Spencer lived for 45 more years and never loved again. He did, however, once “take the comfort of a widow,” resulting in a son. The widow and the second son were left unnamed and unseen, mentioned only in the narration. If the reported 1944 spinoff actually happens, John, Spencer’s second son, and Jack and Elizabeth’s child could feasibly be important characters in it.
1883 told the story of how the Dutton Yellowstone ranch was founded, with the person responsible for their landing place being the central character of the limited series. Elsa, the firstborn child of James (McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill), was the reason why the family made Montana their home. Where she died was where they settled. Elsa’s little brother was the first John Dutton, seen as a young child in 1883 (played by Audie Rick) and an adult in 1923 (played by James Badge Dale). John and Spencer were raised by Uncle Jacob and Aunt Cara (Helen Mirren) after James, Elsa, and Margaret’s deaths.
The adult John got a name change in 1923 to John Dutton I, implying that there would be a child named after him. Since that child is named John II and not John Jr., that means 1923 was communicating from the beginning that John II would not be the child of John I and wife Emma (Marley Shelton). The only other narrative options were Spencer and Alex and Jack and Elizabeth. While a “Jr.” is a child who bears the name of their parent, a “II” can also be a grandchild, a niece/nephew. But a “Jr.” is also often referred to as a “II” in family histories. In 1923‘s case, John II was named after his uncle. Jacob and Cara are helping raise baby John following Alex’s death.
