The Hood River Valley High Eagles softball team came into the Intermountain Conference District playoffs with the momentum from winning five of its last six games. As expected, the No. 3 seeded Eagles’ success continued in a May 17 quarterfinal matchup versus the No. 6 seed and winless Redmond Panthers (0-9 IMC, 0-14 overall).
Four was a key number for the Hood River Valley boys golf team at the May 19 Class 5A state tournament. Senior Ren Tappert finished fourth overall and the Eagles were fourth as a team, earning a spot on the podium and some hardware for the school’s trophy case.
The Hood River Valley High Eagles baseball team overcame a five-run deficit and was two innings away Saturday of winning its first Intermountain Conference title since 2017. As it was, host Pendleton came from behind to tie the championship game in the sixth inning and then won it in the seventh, 7-6.
Trout Lake senior Justin Peck powered his way from third to first over the final 150 meters to win the Class 1A track and field state championship in the 800 meters Saturday.
The Dalles junior Taylor Morehouse peaked at the right time in the pole vault Saturday, winning a Gorge showdown at the 5A Invitational track and field meet at Wilsonville High School.
Hood River Valley High seniors, Poppy Miller and Chole Bullock, are track and field tacticians in arguably different ways. They’re also state champions.
Miller defended her 2019 Class 5A pole vault crown — albeit with a COVID-halted 2020 season in between — in a lifetime best 12 feet, and Bullock won the 800 in a personal best 2 minutes, 20.25 seconds at the 5A Invitational last week in Wilsonville.
The Dalles High Riverhawks boys golf team, guided by Coach Dan Telles, competed in a Class 5A state golf tourney May 19 at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Springfield.
The Ridgeview Ravens seemed like an ideal opponent for The Dalles High in the Intermountain Conference District baseball quarterfinals. The Dalles (3-7 IMC, 3-14 overall) beat Ridgeview (2-8 IMC, 3-14) twice in the regular season by the scores of 13-8 and 12-2 and they earned the IMC’s fourth seed and a home game against the fifth-seeded Ravens.
As has been the case for many athletes across the country, the joy of finally getting to compete in their preferred sport has spread amongst the faces of all the players while the final season of Oregon high school sports kicked off last week.
The Dufur High Rangers boys basketball team had a successful start to their Class 1A Big Sky Conference season, while competing on the hardwood this past week for the first time in nearly 15 months. Because of COVID-19, the normal winter basketball schedule was canceled and rescheduled for a short 10-game spring season this year.
