HOOD RIVER — Want to create new plants from the ones you already love? The Central Gorge Master Gardener Association invites gardeners of all experience levels to a free workshop on plant propagation, focusing on semi-hardwood cuttings.
Participants will learn how, when, and what plants can be successfully propagated from cuttings. The workshop will demonstrate semi-hardwood propagation using Kinnikinnick, a native Columbia Gorge plant, and Hydrangeas, a garden favorite and showstopper.
The workshop will cover:
• When and how to collect plant cuttings for propagation
• How to select healthy plant material
• Techniques for preventing contamination
• Proper methods for taking and preparing semi-hardwood cuttings
• How to care for cuttings as they develop roots
Each participant will leave with plant cuttings placed in a sterile growing medium, along with examples and instructions for caring for their new plants as they develop roots.
Participants should wear work clothes (they will use bleach on pots), nippers, gloves, and a plastic storage bin to transport their plants.
The workshop will be presented by Central Gorge Master Gardener Jim Black, Jan Kelley, Anne Debbaut, Jayne Hill and Margo Dameier.

• Saturday, Sept. 19 — 10 a.m. at the OSU Hood River County Extension Office, 2990 Experiment Station Drive, Hood River
Tuesday, Sept. 22 — 6 p.m. at the Hood River Library, 502 State St., Hood River
About Garden Gatherings
The Central Gorge Master Gardener Association welcomes gardeners of all experience levels to its Garden Gathering series of free educational workshops. Held monthly from March through October, these interactive programs provide practical, research-based gardening information for home gardeners throughout the Columbia Gorge.
