The attention of The Enterprise has been called by a number of White Salmon residents to the move in Goldendale for the establishment of a county hospital. Apparently the Goldendale commercial club is behind the movement, according to reports published in county seat papers. Why Klickitat county should build a hospital in that city is more than any one outside of that town can see. Such movement would only heap a greater tax burden on the people of the country who already are overburdened. It is safe to say that it cannot get anywhere.

Many local residents were awakened from their sound slumbers about 12:30 o’clock Sunday night, when the fire siren started a wailful warning of 10 or more minutes duration. It seemed like half of an hour. The fire boys, and a large number of curious people gathered down town, thinking the whole district must be in flames, only to find that through a short circuit, the fire siren had started itself, and refused to be stopped. There wasn’t even a rehearsal, and fortunately many curious spectators were deprived of a show.

From Washington comes word that the house has passed and sent to the White House a bill authorizing payments of $1,000 to A. C. Lofts, his wife and son, of Hood River, for work and damages done when their sand and gravel plant was relocated in 1937 because of construction of Bonneville dam. The senate claims committee found the Lofts were promised the amount by the war department for work done and for damage suffered because their plant was shut down during the relocation.

All County Judging Day was held last Thursday in the Goldendale Grange Foods, Clothing and Knitting divisions were judged. Eighty 4-H’ers participated in the event and all received scores of Excellent, Very good or Good. The State Judging Team will be picked from those (14 and older) who made high scores in the Foods and Clothing events.

The Hood River County Fair board announced this week that a number of changes will be made in both the physical arrangement and program of the 1966 fair, to be held at Wy’east high school August 4-6. The most significant change will be the use of the newly acquired fair ground property for all local and out-of-town concessions.

Wasco County officials who attended the sentencing of Ma Anand Sheela, Dianne Ivonne Onang and Catherine Jane Elsea in Portland Tuesday had varying reactions concerning the fairness of the sentences. Sheela and the other two ... drew prison terms from 41/2 to 20 years, and Sheela drew $400,000 in fines plus $69,353.31 restitution... [Judge Bill] Hulse, who was poisoned at Rajneeshpuram, said he wasn’t real thrilled with the results. It is unlikely that Wasco County will ever get any of the money that will come from fines levied against Ma Anand Sheela...

The memberships of the two unions negotiating with Champion International “overwhelmingly” rejected the company’s latest contract offer July 10, according to company and union spokesmen. The Montana-based company was asking for concessions in both wages and benefits from workers at its six Northwest mills, including the one in Klickitat. No exact vote count was released by the unions; however, Paul Godsil, union representative for the Lumber Production and Industrial Workers in Klickitat, said the membership “overwhelmingly” voted down the company’s offer by a little better than a 2-1 margin.
