Tuesday Nite Mixed league (first half):
Congratulations to Gutter Dawgs (Jake Kenney, Jacob Begis, Helen Thurlow and Kyle Olsen) who won the 1st half of the exciting Mixed league last week. Gutter Dawgs finished the half with 27.5 wins. C.P.R. and Team Nishi tied for second with 26 wins.
In last week’s key matches of the contenders that had a chance to win the first half:
Underdog Gutter Dawgs faced the fearsome Double A Orchards foursome, but the Dawgs had their day, as they say, beating the powerful Double A crew, 3-1. The Dawgs won the first two games, building up a 134 pin lead over Double A. They barely held on though, losing the third game by 105 pins, but that was good enough to take total pins by just 29 sticks. And that was the ball game as they say, nice bowling Dawgs!
Team Nishi needed to win three games from their opponent, Taco Tuesday in order to win the first half of the league. Winning three games can be a tall order for any team. And it proved to be too much for Team Nishi as the formidable Nishi quartet was only able to win one game from the underdog Taco Tuesday crew this time. Actually, looking closer at the game-by-game results, the match was really tight. Team Nishi won the first game by a whisker, a mere two pins better than Taco Tuesday. The Taco team took the second game by only 24 pins and the third game by just 21 pins. Nevertheless, those numbers were, of course, good enough for Taco time to win total pins by 43 sticks. How about some tasty tacos for everybody?
High Scores last week:
Men: C.P.R.’s Steve Silva, 684 series and Mad Skilz Bob Mason, 266 game.
Women: Double A Orchards’ Nancy Asai, 541 series and 189 game.
Other notable scores last week: Take Ten’s Ken Espersen, 634 series and 237,202 games; Mad Skilz Bob Mason, 611 series; C.P.R.’s Dan Nakamura, 605 series and 216, 205 games; Steve Silva, 241 game; Team Nishi’s Stuart Kawachi, 224 game; and Hood River Supply’s Woody Eskildsen, 219 game.
Bowler of the week: Mad Skilz Bob Mason, 116 pins over average.
Wednesday afternoon Senior Colts & Fillies league (first half):
This week is the last one in the first half of the Senior league. Rolling Pins is currently in first place with 41 wins; Cousins is in second with 39 wins. Either of these two teams can win the first half in the Senior league. It all depends on the outcome of their matches this week.
Going into last week’s matches, these two teams were tied for first place. What made for real drama was they bowled a regularly scheduled, head-to-head match against each other last week. That’s perfect timing, isn’t it! To the victor goes the spoils, right?
Rolling Pins took over first place by beating Cousins 3-1 last week, but it was a mighty close battle. Rolling Pins won the first game 634 pins to Cousins 627 sticks, a slim 7 pin win. Rolling Pins took the second game handily, 662 pins to 638. But Cousins won the third game 619 pins to 593. And here’s the rub, adding up the individual game totals, Rolling Pins won total pins, 1,889 to 1,884, a razor thin margin of just 5 pins. It doesn’t get much closer than that!
So, who carried the ball in this tense battle? Looking at the handicap differential, Cousins had a 34-pin advantage per game which isn’t huge, but it is significant. That means Rolling Pins had to overcome that deficit to win. Gregarious Ed Busick showed up when it counted for his Rolling Pins trio, tossing a 208 in his first game, which was 49 pins over his average, and teammate Matt Phillips rolled a timely 210 for Rolling Pins in the second game, which was 36 pins over his average! Folks, that’s the recipe for success, bowl over your average, especially when it counts the most like in this critical match. Easy Ed finished with a mighty fine 563 three game series which was 86 pins over his average! Can you say MVP? That’s some mighty fine clutch bowling by Rolling Pins when it really counted!
The final first half matches will be conducted in the Senior league this week: Rolling Pins bowls against We Tried and Cousins takes on Pins in Low Places. These two matches will essentially decide the winner of the first half. On paper, these two matches are basically even, the handicap differentials are minor. Nevertheless, Rolling Pins is going to be hard to beat for the title. More than likely Cousins will need to win three or four games to have a chance at first place if those 3 lb. 6 oz. sticks don’t cooperate for Rolling Pins.
High scores last week:
Men: Rice Krispies’ Lynn Spellman, 640 series and Gutt-er Done’s Rod Pratt, 239 game.
Women: Gutt-er Done’s Sue Spellman, 522 series and Gutt-er Done’s Janet Hinkley, 195 game.
Other notable scores last week: Rod Pratt, 628 series and 221 game; Skamaniacs’ Dave Baumsteiger, 213 game; Rolling Pins’ Matt Phillips, 210 game; Rolling Pins’ Ed Busick, 208 game; Jessies Team’s Mick Sherrell, 206, 201 games; Lynn Spellman, 204, 202 games and Pins in Low Places’ Gordon Pillon, 200 game.

Hood BBQ; and Tres Psicos slid by Get Hu’sum BBQ, 14-11.
