Officers searched the Columbia River here Wednesday for a possible drowning victim after a drifting boat and a swimming man were sighted.
But a later report indicated the boat had drifted away from shore with no one in it and a man had swum into the river in an unsuccessful attempt to bring the craft in.
The man got to shore safely, Wasco County Sheriff Sterling Trent said he was advised. Trent said Henry Klindt, who lives near the river northwest of the city, reported seeing an Indian working on a boat on the Washington side of the river. Then the boat drifted away and the simmer made his try at retrieving it.
Klindt said he saw the swimmer return to shore, get in a vehicle with a woman and drive away. Klindt then took his boat across and towed the craft to the Oregon side.
