Kids win refurbished bikes

Max Gamboa-Sanchez with his newly acquired ride: a refurbished bike from Anson’s Bike Buddies, a Hood River nonprofit that repairs and redistributes donated bikes to Mid-Columbia children who may not otherwise have access. Gamboa-Sanchez won his bicycle in a benefit drawing at Wy’east Middle School on March 4 following a screening of “In the Dirt.” The documentary traces a group of passionate Native American cyclists who attempt to bring mountain biking to the Navajo Nation, where no bike shops exist. The event presented by the Rotary Club of Hood River and Columbia Gorge News, included a prize drawing and generated a total of $650, with proceeds split between Anson’s Bike Buddies and Silver Stallion Bicycle Inc, a nonprofit featured in the film whose mission is to educate and empower youth in the bicycle mechanic industry.
