Hood River Library will host Hood River author Glenn Harris for an author reading and book signing on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. Harris is the author of the McCall-Malone Mystery series featuring two Portland private detectives.
The first book in the McCall-Malone Mystery series, “Turnabout is Fatal Play,” is a combination old-fashioned detective novel and modern romantic thriller. Portland private detectives Clint McCall and Devon Malone each have a client who wants to catch a cheating spouse — and it turns out the clients are married to each other! That should be complication enough, but pretty soon there are dead bodies, a local crime boss, out-of-town gangsters, and nasty young punks all thrown into the mix. The punks are out to get McCall, the gangsters are threatening his daughter, and the crime boss is after everybody. On top of all that, and much worse, the dead bodies mean that there may be a new serial killer in town. McCall and Malone have to work together, bickering all the way, to help their clients, protect themselves and stop whoever is killing young women in downtown Portland.

Harris has had a somewhat eclectic career, which is hardly surprising given that his time at Indiana University back in the ‘60s resulted in the atypical combination of a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Ph.D. in English.
Harris soon fled Indiana for Berkeley, Calif., where he helped create an alternative K-12 school just over the city line in Oakland, worked as a writer for University of California Extension, and then established his own public relations and graphic design business.
Very politically active at the same time — it was the ‘60s, after all — he also founded The Berkeley Council of Neighborhood Associations and served as its president for the first three years of its existence (which continues to this day).
He moved north in 1978 to become managing editor of The Lewis River News in Woodland, Wash., and was on the spot when Mount St. Helens blew its top in 1980.
In 1981 Harris found himself here in Hood River and went to work as a writer and manager for the phone company — from which he retired in 2005.
Meanwhile, he’d become active in the local theater, earned a second degree black belt in Taekwondo, and begun writing books featuring Clint McCall and Devon Malone.
He finally began publishing after retirement and so far there are four books in the McCall–Malone Mystery series, with a fifth book nearly completed.
