Rick Ragan Collection: Joe Kollas Photos and Mt. Hood National Forest maps

Mike McCarthy recognized the Mt. Hood Lodge his grandfather, Homer Rogers, built. Rogers bought property above Parkdale in 1909 and built the lodge in 1912, by hand with a number of helpers. Visitors could take the train from Portland, then ride by car or horse-drawn sleigh to the lodge. Since the whole area burned in the late 1800s, there was no timber and vast mountain views.
The lodge burned again in the 1920s, he said, and has now grown up in trees that block the view.
