BLM-Rajneesh land swap hearing possible
An informational meeting on a proposed land swap between the Bureau of Land Management and followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was held for the Wasco County Circuit Court and the public on Wednesday.
Under the proposed land exchange, the Rajneesh would exchange 10,000 acres of various parcels for an 11,000 acre unit of BLM property. Jim Hancock of the BLM office in Prineville said the Rajneesh will be getting scattered areas of public lands that are within the boundaries of the Muddy Ranch and the BLM will be basically getting lands along the John Day River.
He said the BLM’s basic goal is to block up lands along the John Day for recreational usage and more river frontage in public hands. He said if the exchange went through there would be approximately 14,000 acres of land along the river accessible to the public either by river or public roads.
He said the exchange could cut down on the confrontations that have occurred on the ranch in the past. Without a good map and the ability to read one, it is hard to tell which lands on the ranch are public and which lands are private, he said.
